WoW and Free Your Feet in Scotland

Living Streets, the national charity behind the Walk to School campaign, is receiving funding from Scottish Government during 2011/12 to increase walking to school levels at a small number of primary and secondary schools through our successful walking promotion schemes, in partnership with the active schools and school travel coordinator networks or through other local coordinators.

WtS Shona Robson 220x140.pngThe Walk Once a Week (WoW) scheme rewards children at primary schools who ‘walk once a week’ with highly collectable pin badges every month. Progress is recorded weekly by the teacher or, even better, a pupil monitor, using a monthly class wallchart.

Independent evaluation demonstrated that WoW schools had above average walking and nearly a fifth of the primary school students reported that they started walking because of the WoW scheme. The Free Your Feet week-long walking challenge at secondary schools is proven to increase the walking mode share. The scheme has grown significantly with 307 schools across England and over 300,000 students taking part in 2011.
