st peters session 7 001big.jpgSession 1: October 10th 2011

Hi we are the team from St Peters Catholic College of Maths and Computing in Redcar and Cleveland. We are Kevin, Jack B., Modesta, Sammylee, Charlotte, Lewis, Jack F., Tom, Michaela, Carl and Ryan.

To begin with the whole group introduced themselves to Sam our group leader. We had to tell how we got to school.

We had to write some rules, but first we had to decide exactly what rules we should have. We went around in a circle and listened to suggestions from the group, and then came up with the best ones which are:

St Peters session 1 pic2.jpg

  • Listen to everyone
  • Respect
  • Wait then speak
  • Work as a team
  • Discussing, compromise, votes
  • Taking turns

We went to get some pictures taken, but we had to think where we could take them. We decided on having a picture in the Chapel and outside. Then we went back to the classroom and voted on the best picture out of all of them. We decided on the picture where we were all outside.

Session 2: October 14th 2011

Today we had to research the amount of people that walk to school in primary and

secondary schools, then say where we got this information from, off what website. Then we found out about how long it takes an adult or a teenager to walk a mile (15-20 minutes) and how many

calories you will burn by walking one mile (100) and then name two health benefits from walking. Two of the benefits my group came up with were:

  • reduces blood presure
  • release stress

The first group to finish got a prize. Jack F and Lewis M won the first game.

In the second half of this lesson we went into groups and discussed why people do not walk to school and then thought of things we could say to change their minds. Sammy Lee and Modesta won this challenge.

Session 3: October 19th 2011

Today we had to produce a survey to ask the year 7's on how they get to school.

These are all the questions we thought of. We didnt put all of them in the survey.

Then Sammylee and Michaela explained the survey to some year sevens

After we finished we made some of the answers into a table:session 3 extra2.jpg

 Session 4: October 21st

Sammylee brought delicious snacks (biscuits, fruit and juice). Today the group split into pairs and thought of something the whole group could do to get more year 7s walking. Each pair presented their ideas to a Dragons Den panel, consisting of all the other members of the group. All the ideas were excellent. here they are:

st peters session 4 002.jpg

  • a House competition, to win a trip
  • individual rewards for people who walk
  • rewards plus a competition.

The group voted to run a competition to win a trip.

Session 5: October 31st

Today we decided how we were going to this project. We designed a questionnaire for the year 7s to do with a trip. We started designing a leaflet for parents and a poster to put up in school. Here's what everyone is responsible for:

Running the competition: Ryan, Jack B, Kevin. Their main decision was to start the competition on the 14th November.

Designing poster and parents' leaflet: Modesta, Charlotte, Sammyleast peters session 5 005.jpg

Here's a photo of all the notes people made in their groups, when they were discussing their tasks. The powerpoint presentation, poster and leaflet are still being designed on computers- we'll put them up here when they are finished.

We sent some people to the head teacher to explain some of the ideas about the project, and to get permission. Good News: she said yes!

Session 6: November 4th

This is what we did today:

The whole group voted to call the competition 'Get Them Knees Up!'

Sammylea has nearly finished the poster. It looks really professional

Modesta and Charlotte have planned out the leaflet for parents and they have started designing it on the computer.

st peters session 6 001.jpgCarl and Tom created a survey to find out what prize the year sevens wanted.

st peters session 6 004.jpgThey have have decided to make the prize a film show in school, with some extra treats . This is better than a trip to the cinema, becuase it means the group can join in too! They still need to decide what film to show. This is them thinking about films.

Michael, Jack F and Macca are still sorting out their powerpoint and talk for the assembly on Friday 11th. This is Mrs Jennings helping. No pressure!

st peters session 6 002.jpgRyan, Jack B. and Kevin have made tokens in house colours to give to any year sevens who walk. They created a box with a slot in the top to collect the tokens in. They have decided to stand outside, near the bus stops, wearing high visibility vests, so that they are easily seen by all the year sevens as they arrive. They still need to decorate the box and make a rota of who will arrive early to hand out tokens on each day of the competition.

Assembly! 11th November

st peters session 8 assembly.jpgToday we did the assembly to the year 7's . Jack and Macaulay were very good at talking in front of all the year 7's to tell them about our campaign to get them to walk to school and to get prizes at the end of the week. This is only for the winning house so they have to get walking to win the prize.

Today me and Macaulay led a year 7 assembly to introduce them to our walk to school campaign. we showed them a powerpoint that explained the advantages of walking to school and also how they could get involved. our walk to school campaign begins with 5 days of walking to school and when they arrive they will recieve a house card to put in the campaign box. the house that collects the most house cards win the prize! they will miss an afternoon of lessons and instead will watch a film while eating a macdonalds, popcorn and sweets.

Jack F.

Hi I'm Mickey. I phoned neighbourbood services office to ask for help with our campaign (like a professional campaigner). The neighbourhood officer (paul) wasnt in so I will call again on Monday.

We put up posters all round the school and gave out leaflets for the year 7s to take home to their parents.

Monday 14th november

Day one of year 7 walk to school competition! this morning Ryan, Jack, Kevin and Sam met the year 7 as they arrived to school. in 4th place after day one is green house with 8 cards, 3rd place goes to red house with 9 cards, and joint winners are..... yellow and blue house with 12 cards each! considering we only have 80 year 7 kids that's not bad for the first day!!

Wednesday 18th november

Day 3 of the competition: Carolyn Watts from the council's neighbourhood office came to help. Thanks for phoning Mickey!

The Winners!

It's friday 18th and the results are in! Mrs Gittens (maths teacher) helped us add up all the walking tokens. Because there are different numbers of students in each house, we had to work out percentages, not just count them.

And the house with the biggest percentage of walkers  (with 65% walking) is.........

......Yellow House!

We also worked out the total increase in walking by year sevens. In our survey at the beginning of the campaign, we found out that a total of 45% of students walked (either all or part of the way).  During our competition week, 61.5% of the students walked all or part of the way. This is a great result

We checked our budget today. We had a total budget of £250. The posters and leaflets cost £110 to get printed, the DVD cost £5, the food for the reward afternoon is going to cost around £80.

We are having music at the start of the prize afternoon, while everyone is coming in and getting their food. This is the band practising 'Boulevard of Broken dreams'. it's about walking (alone)!
