St Anthony's Girls' School, Sunderland: 2012
Session 1, Tuesday 10th January 2012
Hi we are the group from St Anthony's Girls' School. Last week was our first meeting.
Alexia took our team photo.
Also we thought of ideas for getting people walking more, and group rules.
Here are our group rules:
- Think about our school journeys.
- Respect one another.
- Listen when others are speaking.
- Try to get involved.
- Compromise or vote when we disagree.
- Have fun!
Session 2, Tuesday 17th January 2012
We all got to vote on which photo we would like to represent us on our blog. We all chose the photo that looked the best. In the end we all agreed. We chose photo 2, because everyone was smiling and nothing looked strange.
Kaitlin and Rachel
Our campaign focus is based on getting the year 7 and 8s walking more. We came up with this decision after having a discussion. Several ideas were similar so we looked at the good and bad points of each idea before voting for a campaign aimed at the year 7 and 8s. We want them to have a healthier lifestyle and show them how this will impact their futures.
Amy
We all sat round a table and discussed a survey to find out if people walk to school or not. Firstly we had to choose to do a paper survey or an online survey. We voted and six people voted for paper, 2 people voted for online. We think more people will fill in paper survey. The form tutors are going to give them out. There will be a prize draw and one person will win a shopping voucher.
Samantha
We came up with these questions to ask in the survey (plus loads more). Next week we will choose which ones to include.
Do you walk to school?
Do you get the bus?
What year are you in?
Would you walk if you had the chance?
How can we improve your journey?
Here are some photos from the session- more when we bring our permission slips in!

Session 3 Monday January 24th
The group worked really hard today- so hard they didnt have time to write a blog!
Today's activity was to draw portraits of some of the people who we would like to involve in the Walk to School Campaign. In the next session we'll be finishing the portraits, and thinking about how these people could help make the campaign a success.
Here's a couple of our finished portraits.

today we looked at the results from our questionnaire. The reason most people did not walk was because our school is more than a mile away, but lots of us still walk part of the way to and from school.
We also asked students in years 7 &8 what kind of walking campaign we should run. Most people agreed that a competition with a class reward or prize was better than a challenge with individual prizes.
We decided to promote walking to students and parents at the year 8 parents evening on March 8th.We'll post some pictures after we do it!
14th February 2012
This week was half term so we were not in school. Sorry!
21st February 2012
Today we had an orange, like every other week ;-). Sam wasn't here this week as she went to see her boss in London. We designed and made a leaflet for our parents evening. We also made some pledge cards for parents to fill in for a chance to win an iPod nano. To enter they must promise to encourage their child to walk more, on their school journeys.
28th February
Hi, Sam here. Today we had a very busy session! We kept our energy levels up by eating our lunches, followed by 'fruit salad'. Don't look too closely at the photo!

Here's who was here:
Abigail, Georgina, Ellie, Samantha, Zoe, Kaitlin, Rachel and Victoria.
Some people made the box the pedges will go in. They wrote information for the parents about the pledge prize draw , to stick on the box.

Some people thought about the questions parents and students might ask us at the parents evening, and wrote down examples of good answers on the whiteboard.

We also updated our blog so that parents and students could read it at the parents' evening.

Parents' Evening!

I am writing this blog at our parents evening. Lots of people are signing our pledge cards as after they have they are allowed a badge, a gel pen, or a biscuit.

One parent said "I think it is absolutely fantastic to get more children walking to school" .
We kept on asking parents and students to sign a pledge card. we are persistant and still at the parents now.

6th March
Today we counted tour pledges. We did this by emptying the box . Three of us counted the adult pledges, two of us counted the childrens' pledges. We got 78 pledges in total, 31 from students and 47 from parents.
We did a lucky dip to find out who won the iPods. We did this by picking two people, one to pick a child pledge and one to pick an adult pledge. The student winner was Kaylee McNally. The adult winner was the parent of Ciona Martin. Congratulations- you will get your prizes soon!

Next we decided what we will do for the rest of our campaign. We had two choices; to promote walking to primary school student who will be coming to St Anthony's next September, or a challenge for our own year 7 & 8s.
Our school already has roughly 82% of pupils walking (all or part of the way) to school.
We held a vote. Promoting walking to primary school pupils won, 6 votes to 3.

We all signed a card to send to Zoe's mum and dad , to thank them for providing biscuits and cakes to give to visitors to our table at the parents' evening. Thanks again!
