King James I Community Arts College

March 2011

We've started our project and are making huge progress already. We are a class of Year 10s and we are developing a series of artworks to make the walk to school more attractive (on a temporary basis). Basically, we have identified a route that is poular with students who walk to school and looked at how that walk could be more interesting for them. We have been out and looked at the streetscape, explored the work of artists who create public art and art installations, and used these two things to come up with artwork/installations that will make the walk to school more intriguing, thought provoking or fun. Our ideas include:

a giant plant-like monster clinging to the side of a building from the drainpipea huge object attached to the railings as you come into school made from recycled materials collected within school itselfa giant butterfly attached to another building a fake, partially opened manhole cover cordened off by traffic cones to make people alter their path as they walk past it (will they notice it or just assume it's real?)a large figure climbing up the side of a building

We have chosen to attach many of our artworks to the sides of buildings so that we can easily get permission from the businesses that own them. One of our groups has already asked for permission and the business was very happy yo let us do that, so the rest of will ask as well before we install our work.
