November – December 2011

We are the Walk to School Student Action Group at Bushey Meads Secondary School! Our group was formed in November 2011 to encourage more students to walk to Bushey Meads. Surveys completed in October 2011 show that 32% of students already walk to school, but 29% are driven to school. Our aim is to reduce the number of car trips so there is less traffic around the school and everyone benefits from regular exercise.

We started off by brainstorming all of the barriers that prevent people from walking to school. We wrote all our ideas on post-it notes and added them to the Problem Wall. We also took ideas from the student survey responses.

We then tried to come up with different solutions to overcome the barriers. We put all of those ideas onto our Solution Tree. Now we are using those ideas to run a campaign to promote walking to school. Our target is to reduce the number of students coming to school in a car from 29% to only 20%.
