Highlights from Walk to School Month 2010

WtSM 2010 St Bedes Inf.JPGTo celebrate Walk to School Month, regional Walk to School Coordinators in the North West and West Midlands worked with local School Travel Advisers to hold two WoW Walking Relay events in Halton and Walsall.

A small group of children walked from their primary school to the next one, carrying our big Strider mascot along the way.

Children were also encouraged to make their own mini Strider or kit themselves out in Strider T-shirts and hi-vis jackets.WtSM 2010 St Bedes Jnr.JPG

The Strider 'baton' was then passed on to the next group of pupils who continued the relay to the next school on the route.

Children enjoyed walking around their neighbourhoods and the relays finished on local common ground. The public responded well, with many a wave from passers by and one lady in her eighties sharing her own walking experiences.

Both events were also attended by the local Mayor.

In Caerphilly, over 3000 pupils and teachers braved chilly temperatures to join walking buses

Ysgol WtSM 2010.JPGCllr. Rob Gough, Cabinet Member for Transportation and Planning said, 'I am so proud of our pupils for embracing the challenge and jumping on board the walking bus, despite the recent cold weather.'

Ysgol-y-Lawnt in Rhymney designed a bus to be placed on the school walls acting as a totaliser for each day they completed another eco friendly journey to school.
