Schools

Increasing walking to school has lots of benefits for schools, which is why over 6,400 schools take part in the campaign. It’s a great way to be green and achieve your Healthy School and Eco-school status and reach your travel plan targets. It also reduces congestion and reduces the likelihood of accidents around the school gates, while providing opportunities to socialise and enjoy the local environment. It sends out a strong message to current and prospective parents, that you care about your pupils’ health, the environment and the wider community.

For pupils, it’s a fun and easy way to fit in more exercise and make sure they are getting the recommended 60 minutes per day. Also, 9 out of 10 teachers consider that the walk to school makes children brighter, more alert and ready for the first class of the day (DfT, 2001).  Check out our FAQ, other ways to get involved and find out more about our current range of schemes:

Walk to School and the Wider Curriculum

Not only is Walking to School a great way to get pupils fitter and more active, but it also has many links with the wider curriculum. For example:

  • Class data can be used in numeracy to make data collecting a real and relevant experience. It can also be used to look at distance and measurements in real life.
  • Children may be concerned about walking to school due to traffic etc. This can easily be linked into persuasive writing units, as well as “Local Traffic- an environmental issue” (See QCA Geography Unit 20).
  • By walking to school, children become more aware of their local area. The knowledge they gain could be used in “Investigating our area” (see QCA Geog Unit 6) and “What was it like to live here in the past?” (QCA History Unit 18)
  • Children can also look at the health benefits of walking linking it into “Keeping Healthy” (QCA Science Unit 5A).
  • There are lots of opportunities to develop thematic units around children’s experiences of walking to school through art, poetry, shape etc. The list is endless…
