EVENT IDEAS
Here are some fun activities for schools to get involved in during International Walk to School MonthPower up treadmill generator
For the travelling promotion: a foot-powered electric generator that works by having children walk quickly on a treadmill to light up a panel of light bulbs. Light bulbs here being a symbol for bright ideas. This could be quite an interesting Heath Robinson contraption that would cause a stir in the playground.
The lights could be a different coloured display - maybe a brain that lights up more and more as more power is generated to show how energy makes you sharper, or the ‘power up’ logo.
If a treadmill was too difficult to organise a similar effect could be achieved using a hand-cranked generator or a bicycle, to light up the bulbs They can be bought from Amazon here: or a bicycle, to light up the bulbs – this would still be about energy generating bright ideas.
Standing up quiz
Try a quick quiz where every one has to stand up – or move around – and see if it makes pupils answer questions quicker. Similar to the board room idea with no chairs.
Or remove all the chairs for one lesson to see if standing up makes for a more interactive atmosphere.
Take 10
A bit like the Take 10 scheme that some schools use – try a burst of exercise before each lesson to get those brain cells going. Perhaps 10 star jumps – and explain how that sends oxygen up to the brain to get you thinking quicker.
Could be worth you ordering one of these packs for more ideas –

Look at the game on the parents leaflet and see if you can sketch/chalk out a giant version for the playground. Then divide the class into teams and play the game outside.
If this was thought to be too complicated to set up by individual schools it could be made a more elaborate version of the same game and used as the travelling exhibition for specific high PR events – set up in school playgrounds to be played at breaktime.
Relay race
Organise a relay race with a quiz element. Teams have to race using different technique (eg three legged versus hopping) and at the end of each leg a quiz question has to be answered. The idea is to discuss which sorts of exercise are best at boosting brain cells.
Smiling exercises
Stretching exercises/Tai Chi
After half a lesson get up and walk around and stretch those muscles and walk around. Does this make you feel more relaxed? If you’re more relaxed then you will be in a better frame of mind for learning. What stretches can you think of?
A funny thing happened on the way to school….
A story competition to ask children the funny things on the way to school – so at the same time as talking about walking to school they might use the humour to discuss being more relaxed at school.
Mood enhancers (art)
Endorphins are the natural chemicals that put you in a good mood – but what do endorphins look like? Can each class create a model endorphin in art?
Can you think of other mood enhancers – music, tv, sugar!
The generation gameHow many ways can you think of generating electricity by using your own body? Running on a treadmill, po-going, space hoppers, cycling etc etc – but how would you capture the energy. Can you design an energy machine that could capture your bodies energy and use it to power the school?
Sponsored walk
Can the theme be tied in to a sponsored walk your school may already be working on?
