Make you own Strider mask or Strider puppet

A great way of getting involved in Walk to School is to make your own Strider mask or Strider puppet. This page gives you some ideas of how to do it.

When you have made your mask or puppet, why not send us a photo: walktoschool@livingstreets.org.uk. We will add the best ones to the gallery here.
Step 1 - download the template

Download Strider outline

Start by downloading the outline of Strider here. This is free to use, and you can print as many as you like. Print it out onto stiff card.
Step 2 - decorate it

Colour in the picture

Now decorate the outline. You could use pencils, felt tips or paint, or you could glue fabric or glitter to it. You could even make a collage!

If everyone in your class is doing it, why not decorate each outline as a flag of the world, or as an animal. Be as imaginative as you can!
Step 3 - decide what you want to make
You could make a glove puppet, a stick puppet, a masquerade (stick) mask, or an elastic mask. There are pictures of all of these further down this page if you need some ideas.

Cut out the outline

Step 4 - cut it out
Now cut out the outline. Be careful with scissors and get an adult to help if you have trouble.

If you want to make a glove puppet you will need two outlines, it is easiest to put two pieces of card together and cut them both out at the same time.

How to make a glove puppet

Glue the edges together

Put a thin line of glue right around the edge of one of the outlines (make sure it is not the side you have decorated), but leaving a gap at the bottom (marked in red on the photo). It helps to put glue over all of Striders toes!

Wave your puppet!

Once you have put on the glue, stick the two layers together. When the glue is dry, slide your hand into the space between the card and wave your puppet!

How to make a stick puppet

Stick a pencil to the back

To make a stick puppet, tape a pencil to the bottom of the back of the outline.

You can then wave the puppet from side to side.

How to make an elastic mask

Making a hole for the elastic

Make a hole in each side for the elastic to be tied to. You can do this by putting blu tak on the table (to protect the surface) then pushing gently through with the point of a pencil.

Make two holes for your eyes in the same way, then widen them out carefully using scissors.

The finished elastic mask

Tie some elastic or string to one of the holes, then adjust it to fit and tie off the other end.

How to make a masquerade (stick) mask

The finished stick mask

Stick a pencil to the back of the outline (in the same way as for the stick puppet), then carefully cut out some eyes.
