Citizenship - Get Involved

This page has now been moved to the Step Up website: here

Our secondary engagement scheme is aimed at schools where students want the opportunity to:
  • Make new friends and have fun
  • Meet the decision-makers in the area and get their voice heard
  • Make a difference
  • Learn campaigning skills (eg video journalism, photography, active citizenship, blogging, team working and leadership, press and communications, event planning)
  • Save the planet

Living Streets is looking to work with schools to support pupil led campaigning for better walking routes to school. We want more people to choose to walk to school (including teachers!).

Participating schools will get one year's support from Living Streets, for a pupil-led campaign to raise awareness of the issue, improve walking routes, and increase the number of walking journeys made to their school.

The students will receive training, encouragement, invitations to regional and national events and up to £500 in cash to run the campaign.

We need: the support of the school and a commitment, by at least one member of school staff, to act as an adult mentor. We also expect you to attend our launch event in Newcastle on 25th September.

If you wish your school to be considered for Walk to School Secondary Engagement, send an e-mail to sam.potter@livingstreets.org.uk including:
  1. Name and address and phone number of school
  2. The name, job title and e-mail address/phone number of a contact member of staff, along with your name if you are a parent or student
  3. Tell us briefly how the group would be organised, and how the school will support it.

If you have any questions, or would like more information, contact us through the e-mail or on 0191 2457360

Some questions you may want to ask yourself before nominating your school

We recommend that the core campaigning group should consist of between 8 and 20 pupils, with 15 being about the right number for most schools. However, we are open to any arrangement your school feels able to support. Your "Walk to School" group will be responsible for devising and delivering opportunities for involvement and events for the whole school community.
We are committed to working with any age group of secondary pupils, at any ability level. We will tailor our support to the age and needs of the group.Due to our funding, we are only currently able to offer this opportunity to English Secondary Schools.

We would like to link what we are offering with the formal citizenship curriculum, supporting the group as an extra-curricular activity. However, we are open to any arrangement the school thinks will work best, including links with other aspects of the curriculum, such as enterprise.

Will the school council be involved?

Does the school have a School Travel Plan (STP)?

Are the members of staff involved in the STP happy to support the "Walk to School" group?

NB: Formal written commitment from the head teacher, in the form of sign-up to a memorandum of understanding will be required, before the programme starts.
