The Big WoW in London, 24 September 2008

On 24 September 2008, schools across London will be taking part in The Big Wow - a celebration event organised by Transport for London to mark the launch of the 2008/09 WoW campaign.

Teachers and school representatives across London are being asked to encourage their school to walk to a local landmark, and there is lots of help available to help them do it!

ABOUT THE THEME

The theme this year is landmarks which covers both key London landmarks such as ‘Big Ben’ and small but very important local landmarks such as town halls, community centres, parks, high streets or even another school.

HOW CAN MY SCHOOL GET INVOLVED?

Schools can download and use all the resources below, free of charge. Taken together, the resources contain everything you need to know to organise your own Big WoW event and to get people involved with your activity.

For more information and support, get in touch with your local School Travel Adviser who will be based in your local council.

WHAT RESOURCES ARE AVAILABLE?

We have lots of resources for teachers. They are aimed at Key Stage 2, in particular Year 5 pupils, although they could be adapted for other year groups with a little bit of expert teacher know-how!

Big WoW lesson plans

Six lesson plans have been designed for you to run in school. Each lesson can be expanded or shortened depending on time available. They can be taught over one half term or one week depending on curriculum plans.

The lesson plans will help pupils to identify various land marks in their borough. Pupils can then be asked to select one landmark within good walking distance from their school and plan a route to it.

By encouraging children to take walking visits to these local landmarks the campaign will help children to know their local area better, including understanding the different histories cultures and features as they explore on foot. Download the lesson plans here:
