Thursday 1 December 2011
A student-led campaign at St Peter’s Catholic College of Maths and Computing in Redcar and Cleveland increased the number of Year 7 students walking to school by 20 per cent. As part of their BTEC qualification in Work Skills, thirteen Year 11 students explored the reasons why 55 pre cent of students didn’t walk. They discovered that many parents offered their children lifts to school. The students developed and delivered a week-long walking challenge, with students who walked earning house tokens. Crucially, they designed a leaflet aimed at parents, urging them to support the campaign. Members of the winning house won an afternoon of fun activities hosted by the Year 11s, including a band performance and a film screening with home-made popcorn.
You can read the students’ own account of their Campaign-in-a-Box experience on their blog page.

WoW (Walk Once a Week) is our most popular scheme - children who walk at least once a week are rewarded with a highly collectable monthly pin badge.
